Yeah, this is old news. My excuse is I'm busy, but today I actually looked through my news aggregator and found out that Sk*rt has finally changed their name. I admit, I'm not an avid Sk*rt reader, but I did kind of like the site in general. It's good looking, at least, and something to do if I'm looking to spend a few minutes vegging out. Their domain name sucked, though, http://sk-rt.com - how do you tell someone that? They realized this (or didn't want to deal w/ Skirt magazine suing them) and a few months back I see they're looking to change their name. Great!
Alright, so they did, and the new name is kirtsy. Cute, right? Ehh, I don't know. It makes me cringe. Is it just me that sees a "curtsy" as a submissive gesture? As something us women generally don't do anymore, and for good reason?
A little about Sk*rt kirtsy: it's a digg-like site targeted at women. A lot of fashion, gossip, beauty tips. They have distinctive categories like "Fashion and Style" or "Design and Crafts". Okay, I get it. Women are into these things. It's a good idea.
Am I being too hard on them? Perhaps. Probably. Do I think they should have, could have chosen a better name? Most definitely. Yes. Absolutely. A name that shows strength would have been nice. A name that yells, Hey, I am woman. Not a name that pops in an image of a 50s woman in her perfect dress in the kitchen curtsying around and waiting on her husband hand and foot.
Ugh.
